What is a dental CBCT scan?
Cone-beam computed tomography uses X-rays to create three-dimensional views of teeth and jaws. It provides a different view from a conventional two-dimensional dental X-ray. CBCT is also different from an optical intraoral scanner used to record the surfaces of teeth.
When can 3D imaging help?
- Dental implant planning: assessing bone dimensions and the position of nearby anatomical structures.
- Selected impacted wisdom tooth cases: investigating the relationship between a tooth and nearby structures when other images do not answer the clinical question.
- Selected complex root canal cases: additional imaging where an examination and conventional X-rays leave an important question unresolved.
A scan when it helps your care
CBCT is not a routine requirement for every patient. It uses ionising radiation and generally involves more exposure than conventional dental X-rays. The expected benefit must justify the examination. Bring previous images to help avoid unnecessary repeat scans, and tell the team if you are pregnant or may be pregnant.
